Experiencing a Simultaneous Translation

This weekend, I was able to experience for a second time the difficulty a professional consecutive translator has to go through. Trasnslation is more than just knowing another language; it is about practicing and speech skills. When I observed the translator doing his job I noticed a lot of things that a person who wants to be a translator needs. Here are the requirements I noticed:

1) practice, pratice, practice makes perfect
2) fluent, fast, talking skills, good pronunciation
3) always be inform about news in both cultures of the languages you may know

At this event a number of the translator friends were able to speak english so why would they required him for the event?

That number of friends knows a second language (in this case english) but they do not have enough practice to keep up with what they are listening to and effectively communicate to the ones who don't know the language good enough because of the lack of vocabulary in a specialized topic. People who know a second language are able to listen and comprehend but when it comes to communicating the same message to someone else people are not able to spread the message just as they heard it.

Therefore, in the Translation Field it is the translator's competences as an interpreter that are required to communicate effectively at a simultaneous pace.
